My partner, Lr, Carroll, has kept me informed about his ne-
kotiations with your good selves in regard to a new contract between us
relative to the Texas Company's business. Unfortunately we seem, how-
ever, as much at variance as before, if not more so. On the other hand,
as a new cargo is now on its way to China, a quick settlement is of
particular importance.
I intended to leave New York on the 6th of next month, hav-
ing booked my passage in the 35. "Lapland", but, on second considera-
tion, as y Company made itself responsible for this cargo and for
acceptances amounting to quite £ 80,000, and as I am answerable to the
exas Company that no trouble arises over the handling of the cargo
in China, I have now decided to wait where I am for this settlement
between us; or, should this not be arrived at, that 1 myself go to
China, as the agent of the Texas Co. and provided with their credent fels;"
and full powers, in order to be on the spot before the cargo arrives
and to make the necessary arrangements with others most sincerely as
I, for one + would regret this necessity. The vessel is going via the
Dape and will not arrive in Hongkong before Lay.

I am therefore writing you today so as to obviate any delay
through possible misunderstandings, which might arise by dealing with
this latter in a less direct manner; and, for the same reason, I ask
